L'aereo era partito da Bi'kek, la capitale del Kirghizistan, ed era diretto all'aeroporto di Payam, una città a sudovest di Karaj, circa 35 km da Tehran. Il boeing trasportava carne e secondo Farsnews apparteneva all'esercito iraniano.
